The Calgary Flames assigned Brett Sutter, son of general manager Darryl Sutter, to the Quad City Flames of the AHL on Friday. Sutter played in three games for Calgary, scoring his first career goal in his NHL debut Dec. 23 against Anaheim. The goal tied the game in the third period en route to a 4-3 victory.

Canadiens forward Alex Tanguay will miss six weeks after injuring his left shoulder in a game this week. Tanguay has scored 10 goals for Montreal and is third on the team with 26 points. He was hurt Tuesday night against Tampa Bay on a hit by Evgeni Artyukhin. The 29-year-old Tanguay said Thursday that he won’t need surgery.

Jason LaBarbera looked pretty good in a Vancouver uniform. Acquired from the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday after Curtis Sanford was injured, LaBarbera made 31 saves Thursday night in the Canucks’ 2-1 victory over Nashville. “I really liked the way he challenged the shooters,” Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault said.

Instead of celebrating another home victory, Alex Ovechkin bowed his head and sat silently on a table outside the Tampa Bay Lightning dressing room. After scoring a goal and adding two assists to help the Washington Capitals beat Tampa Bay 7-4 on Thursday night for their fifth straight victory, Ovechkin was worried about a former teammate who was injured on the Russian star’s hard check.

The Boston Bruins roughed up the defending Eastern Conference champions — again. Manny Fernandez made 30 saves to remain perfect at home and the Bruins extended their winning streak to 10 games with a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night. Boston also won at Pittsburgh on Tuesday night.

The atmosphere was electric. Bundled-up fans got a chance to extend their New Year’s Eve parties and watch hockey in a venerable stadium where baseball usually fills the seats. Boston Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron, who hasn’t played since suffering a concussion on Dec. 20, was placed on injured reserve Wednesday and will miss at least another week. Bergeron, who missed most of last season with a concussion, spent a night in the hospital after a collision with Carolina’s Dennis Seidenberg.

Sergei Samsonov’s backhanders kept the Carolina Hurricanes moving forward under new coach Paul Maurice. Samsonov scored two goals with his backhand and added an assist to lead Carolina past the Atlanta Thrashers, 3-1 on Wednesday night. Joe Corvo also scored after Samsonov snapped out of a two-goals-in-10-games slump for the Hurricanes.
